Not so Wild E. Coyotes.

Hey seaster,

You mentioned coyotes, and all I can think of is the fear I felt all summer about the coyotes in Stanley Park. I've seen a few coyotes throughout the park during one of many daily commutes into work or during a daily walk, but they usually run away before you can get a good look. This summer though, the coyotes went WILD - or perhaps they became the exact opposite of wild. People weren't scary anymore, and due to the many locals and tourists feeding wildlife in the park, they actually became conditioned and were no longer afraid of humans, and associated them with food.

This meant that coyotes were becoming braver, more aggressive, and many people ended up getting bit. The park ended up closing during the night to try and keep people safe, but the only solution that would work long-term was to eradicate the conditioned coyotes. Such a sad, sad story, as this was 100% preventable. I always try to educate people when I am outside to leave the animals alone - bread, fries and burgers don't grow on trees, and animals should not be eating them.

Luckily there are signs throughout the park now discouraging people from feeding the wildlife. I walk through the park everyday, and it has been a while since I have seen anyone feeding the birds, fish, raccoons, or coyotes!

Love ya,

Hailey
